Certification FAQs

For those who weren't there to get my hand out at Saturday's meeting, here are the Certification FAQ's:

Certification FAQs

How are YCLs involved in certification?

YCLs will teach all certification classes during camp.

What certification responsibilities do YCLs have before camp?
All YCLs must teach a “practice” certification lesson at the May YCL meeting.

What will I teach?
You will teach 1 of the actual certification lessons you’ll be teaching at camp.

When will I get my certification assignments?
As soon as possible. You’ll get your first teaching assignments by mid-March at the latest.

I’m not very comfortable teaching. Will you give us any training?
Of course. In fact, that’s what we’ll spend the bulk of the next meeting going over. And if you need any additional help, I’m always available. You can contact me by email (krissiecook[at]gmail.com) or by phone (284-8851) any time.

Do I get to choose what I teach? More importantly, do I get to choose who I teach with?
Not really. If you would like to request something that you really really want to teach, I’ll consider it. But frankly, I worry more about matching you up with who you’ll be teaching than who you’ll be teaching with.

What if I can’t be at the May meeting to teach?
If you can’t make the May meeting, you can teach at the April meeting. Or, you can get me a video of yourself teaching by the Thursday before the May meeting. I will accept VHS and DVD recordings, as well as .avi, .mov and .mpg digital formats. Again, I need that no later than Thursday.

Will there be any pre-certification this year?
Probably not. I’m hoping to finalize that this week when I meet with the camp site managers.

I plan on excelling as a YCL and especially during certification. Will there be any special recognition for YCLs who put forth an extraordinary effort?
Yes. For every day of certification at camp, there will be an award for teaching excellence. The award will include a prize, and not the cheesy kind. It’ll be the kind you’ll wish you won.

Is certification really that important?
Are you really asking me that?

If I go to camp as a 5th year, will you guarantee that I’ll earn my Liahona?
No. In fact, if you’ve finished all four years of certification but don’t participate in the pre-camp YCL meetings or don’t teach your practice lesson, you’ll recertify 4th year at camp this year and you will not be a YCL. All YCLs who fully complete all assignments before and during camp will be eligible to become Liahonas.

Why are you so harsh?
Oh, sorry, I was too busy focusing on creating an amazing experience for the campers to notice my own harshness.
